Charles Montgomery on Happy Cities

From our transport systems to our buildings, the design of our city can seriously impact on our everyday happiness.

The way a city is designed can be the difference between people feeling like they have mastery over their lives or feeling overwhelmed.  Design can also effect how socially connected or isolated people’s lives are.

Charles Montgomery, author of The Happy City, has devoted his career to demonstrating the way we design cities really does influence how happy people are.  He illustrates this through a range of insightful and often funny examples.  From Columbia to the streets of New York, Montgomery argues design really does influence the way people interact and that ultimately city design will either reinforce our well-being and social ties or suppress them.
